This beautifully redesigned book is designed specifically as a textbook on Western medicine for practitioners of Traditional East Asian Medicine. Written by Dr. Bruce Robinson, a western MD who has been teaching western medical concepts to acupuncturists and Chinese herbalists for decades, this book will teach you -The clinical presentation and treatment of the major diseases seen in Western medical practice today -Red-flag cases that need urgent referral to an MD or emergency room -How to confidently interact with Western medical practitioners -Improved diagnostic skills and physical exam techniques -New scientific approaches for treating cardiovascular diseases and cancer

I appreciate that students and Oriental Medicine practitioners may not all be interested in a depth of knowledge regarding Western Medicine physiology or pathology. Our medicine in not anchored in that science; however, having a working knowledge gives us an ability to integrate with and communicate within the framework of Western Medicine as well as having broader diagnostic parameters. I appreciate the author's knowledge and experience and desire to bridge Oriental and Western Medicine with those goals in mind. Unfortunately, this book is seemingly formatted to increase its length (large margins, large font) resulting in an amazing amount of white per page as compared to text. I wonder if this is to make the text more comparable to the thickness of western medical texts. Content-wise it presents a lot of information yet falls short - kind of like cliff notes - alternatively breezing over western medical disease processes or including complex concepts without explanation of the origin of the concept - either way chinese medical practitioners are short-changed in information. I do appreciate the inclusion of applicable Chinese Medical Theory, clinical red flags and interesting case studies. However, as a student in a MAOM masters program, I find I have to reach to 2nd yr western med texts to find the depth of knowledge needed to understand pathology and its corresponding presentation in clinic. The texts I'm finding most helpful are "Pathology made ridiculously simple" and "Clinical Pathophysiology made ridiculously simple" (concise review texts med students use to prepare for the USMLE Step 1) and "A Clinical Medicine Guide - A Holistic Perspective" by Stephen Gascoigne.Product details
