The couple embarks on a wild robbery spree, but after a raid on a shoe shop goes absurdly wrong, Tony ends up behind bars and Doris remains free—but suffers a dark destiny.
A standout tale from Guzman, Go Home, “Revenge” details the dangerously tumultuous marriage between factory foreman Richard and his ornery wife, Caroline. “Mimic,” from the previously collected Men, Women and Children, takes place in the mind of a nameless hero who is locked away in an asylum—a man who uses the art of mimicry to escape reality and avoid being himself. And in “No Name in the Street,” from The Second Chance, an ex-miner who ekes out a living collecting social security and hunting for golf balls, moves in with a woman who has indoor plumbing—but his dog refuses to go along with the plan.

I had never heard of this author before, but since I like short stories and mid-century writing, I gave it a try. Some of the writing in this collection is absolutely brilliant. Sillitoe writes on a number of topics, but incorporates the time period well into the work, so I find the work historically informative. It a huge collection, which is great too. I am really enjoying these stories, some more than others, but that's normal in a short story collection.Product details

Sillitoe is an excellent story teller. Direct, fast paced, the story goes not only to the reader brain but often (as in the "Ragman's Daughter" stories volume) to his heart too. So, the more stories belonging to that volume would be collected, the better the compilation will be. Still the ones coming from the famous "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" are very good too. This author remains as being possibly the best portrait of the working class people one could read. Realistic but with plenty of poetry, these witty short stories are a must read. Warmly recommend it.
